The Interview, the new movie by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, has been a blockbuster in the film industry, earning a record $1.8 billion worldwide in its opening weekend.
It also had the most-watched film of the year with 2.2 billion views on YouTube.
The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor.
Seth Rokeach, who is directing The Interview with Seth Raimon, talked with The Hollywood Reporter about the process of shooting The Interview in China and the making of The Interview itself.
Q: You shot the movie in China for two weeks.
How did you come to this decision to do it?
A: We shot The Interview for two and a half weeks.
That’s not uncommon for Seth.
He shoots a lot of movies, and the most important thing is to do something.
We had the studio come to us with the idea, and we all agreed on a timeframe.
They were ready to shoot it, and I was the one who had to jump in and shoot the film.
The first day, they were shooting a scene and said, “Are you going to go to a location like Beijing or Shanghai?”
We said, yeah, that’s fine.
But we also had to be in China.
And we were going to shoot a lot, so that’s why we ended up doing it in Beijing.
Did you guys plan ahead beforehand?
It’s like, we all just know we’re going to be shooting in Beijing, but we don’t really know where it is.
We know there’s going to have to be a huge amount of security.
We knew the city would be a little different than it was when we first started shooting the movie, but it’s also going to take a lot more time.
So I knew it would take a couple of weeks.
We’d be on set for five days, but I knew we’d be in Beijing the whole time.
Q.: Did you have a sense of what it was going to look like in the beginning?
A.: We knew that we were shooting in China, but they were asking questions about what they saw in the movie.
We were told, “Don’t worry, we’ll shoot in China.”
I think we knew the Chinese are a very good team and a very kind people.
They’ve had a very tough history.
So, they had a lot to deal with.
Q and A: Did you know they were going up against a country that was also involved in an uprising?
A, We knew.
I knew a lot about that.
We all knew what we were in for.
I think that’s what they were worried about.
Q in China: What was your first day like?
A in China was a very nice day.
I got to meet with a lot people and I think it was a nice day, too.
The hotel was really nice, the food was great.
Q for Chinese fans: How did the movie come together?
A for the Chinese fans, I had a great time.
I went back to China.
I was there for two months.
I’m really happy with it.
It was very interesting to me.
There were a lot questions.
We shot all the scenes in the hotel.
We also shot in Shanghai.
So it was kind of a little bit of a weird situation.
We have a lot going on there, but that was my first time.
That was my second experience with a movie, and it was very good.
Q to Chinese fans from China: You have a long history in China as a film director.
Why did you decide to shoot in the country?
A It’s funny.
It came out of the way I started my career in the Chinese film industry.
I came to the U.S. as an actor in the mid-’70s, and my first film was called “A Tale of Two Cities,” which I directed.
The movie came out and it made $5 million in theaters.
I thought, “If I can just do it again, I’m going to try it in China,” so I went into the film business.
And that’s how it all began.
Q, The Interview: What were you doing in China?
A I was doing movies.
I had an agent.
I didn’t really have a choice.
It wasn’t like, “I’m going there because I have an agent.”
I just had to do what I had to, because I had this very simple business idea.
Q: What about the movie’s title?
A There was a Chinese translation, “The Interview.”
I had the idea to call it The Interview.
I actually called it “The Man in the High Castle,” but it didn’t have that ring.
I felt like, the name is too much of a mouthful.
The title was very close to “The Great Game,” and that was
